How can internet companies advertise speeds of 2 – 32 megabytes when?

February 15, 2010 // Posted in Other - Computers (Tags: , , , ) |  3 Comments

When the max these connections usually download at is around 500kb – 1mb

I was tricked into a package by a comcast rep for 16mb per second.

The fastest i’ve gotten was 10 second period of 3mb per second.

Yeah I know it depends on the server but at some cases it’s obvious that comcast is letting it go faster for a short period then throttling it back down.

Isn’t there laws against this? misleading advertisement?

How difficult is it to obtain private info from Internet companies for a harassing email?

December 16, 2009 // Posted in Other - Computers (Tags: , , , ) |  2 Comments

If it’s 1 or 2 obnoxious anonymous emails that were sent to me and I’d like to obtain IP and user information from Yahoo! or an ISP, how difficult is it? Do I have to go thru law enforcement? Would law enforcement take 2 obnoxious emails seriously?
The emails were targeting me and they were sent to people I know and work with. Would law enforcement take it seriously then?

Do internet companies purposefully slow down connection speeds to sell faster service?

December 12, 2009 // Posted in Other - Computers (Tags: , , , ) |  3 Comments

All I know is, our DSL internet service through AT&T is SO slow now!!! It is totally unreliable, and I know they are pushing people to upgrade to faster services. Is it possible that they are purposefully slowing down our connection speeds to get us to upgrade for more money?

Technical requirements for email marketing (30k+ subscribers)?

September 13, 2009 // Posted in Other - Computers (Tags: , , , ) |  2 Comments

How do those email marketing companies (eg: icontact.com, constantcontact.com) work from a technical standpoint? Do they need multiple servers to prevent messages from bouncing back from the receiving server? I manage my own email list of customers and have trouble emailing them through my own domain because the receiving server say’s we’ve sent too many emails to their domain.

Ethics of use of gathered email addresses?

September 5, 2009 // Posted in Other - Computers (Tags: , , , ) |  2 Comments

Take this situation: a quite popular blog which requires valid email address for commenting. Owner wants to use these email addresses for sending periodical email newsletters to the commenters (I would be the coder who creates the back end to do this). I’m a bit concerned, because the commenters left those addresses with one particular purpose and they were never told that it will be used for newsletters. Is this ethical?

Additionally, they would be able to opt out from this system but only after receiving the first newsletter.

Thanks in advance
