I would not suggest this approach. Think of a campaign that will highlight the software / system / service that you are offering.
You absolutely can…and they can absolutely sue you.
Be original … think of an ad that is compatible to your company remember not to use any word resembling Microsoft..
Using a brand name like that is hard. Legally, you could be sued, but more than that, you are positioning yourself in comparison to another business instead of showcasing the new and wonderful things your company has. Are you original, solve a problem that no one else does? Have a product that is unique and could grow like Microsoft? Instead of comparing, come up with a more original campaign. Besides, a lot of people have a distaste or dislike for Microsoft, so you would automatically be turning them off.
Previous answers are right! There is little point in trying to compete with Microsoft. Forgetting the legal implications, attempting to compare yourself with the likes of Microsoft who dominate the market is futile. You need to differentiate your product offering maybe even find your niche market to establish yourselves if only on a small scale to begin with. As an example look at Apple originally the market leader overtaken by Microsoft they have re invented the image again becoming the product for the professional writer, marketing manager to have at home. Simple and stylish. Differentiate your product.
No, never do you want to gauge who you are by mentioning a competitor. You are giving them exposure and you are paying for it. Also, that gives everyone the impression that Mirosoft sets the standard or they are the best. That very well may be but you want the customers to think what you have to offer is better or fits their needs better. Everyone knows Microsoft sets the standards so to say it better without being obvious or mentioning them it can be said —— “A Better Alternative in Software”
